Happy Ntshingila (Chairman) has served on a number of boards and has vast experience in the IT, marketing, advertising and communications, telecommunications, financial services as well as media sectors. He has occupied senior management and executive positions at Unilever, IBM, Tiger Brands, HerdBuoys McCann-Erickson (CEO), Vodacom, Absa and SuperSport International (CEO). He is the former Deputy Chairman of Brand SA and now serves on the board of the Gauteng Tourism Authority. In 2007 he was named Marketing Person of the Year and has been credited with the success of the Absa brand, which occupied the Number 1 banking and coolest brand status six years in succession under his watch.
Happy is one of the founders of South Africa’s first black owned advertising agency, HerdBuoys, which had, among its many achievements, the distinction of having positioned and launched the new colours of South African Airways post-1994. He has also been credited with the success of various sponsorship properties, namely Springboks, the Absa Currie Cup, the Absa Cape Epic and the Absa Premiership, amongst others.
In 2009 he published a book, Black Jerusalem, which is an account of the challenges faced by ad agencies during the pitch process.
Happy was recently recognised with the 2016 Financial Mail AdFocus Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution towards the success of the South African advertising industry.
Romeo Kumalo’s name is synonymous with the Media and the Telecommunications industry on the African continent. Having achieved great success in the media and broadcasting industry, Romeo transitioned into the Information, Communications and Telecoms sector as a highly successful CEO of Vodacom/Vodafone International where he held positions accountable for commercial development and managing the cellular giant’s interest in all African markets.
A commercial strategist with over 20 years’ diversified experience in ICT, Romeo was on the Board of Vodacom South Africa as Executive Commercial Director and was a member of the Vodacom Executive Committee and Vodafone AMAP CEO Forum until 2015. He also served as a director of various Vodacom group of companies in Africa.
Romeo is currently the CEO and co-founder of Washirika Holdings, a pan-African investment holding and private equity company with investments that span the property, green energy and ICT sectors. His opinion on matters pertaining to entrepreneurship, telecommunications infrastructure, regulation and access are highly regarded and sought after within the South African market. He is a regular panel member, key note speaker and advisor on all matters pertaining to the South African telecommunications industry. Romeo is an excellent communicator with well established networks across Africa. His proven track record of creating value, successfully turning around underperforming businesses and building leading teams has solidified his position as a leading business man in South Africa.
He is a shareholder and board director of GroTech, South Africa’s second biggest venture capital tech fund, which finances tech start-ups looking for growth capital to scale their business. He is also an investor in other tech start-ups.
Romeo recently appeared on prime time television as one of the Sharks on the South African version of the two time Emmy award-winning show Shark Tank. He is also a member of the Johannesburg golden chapter of the Young Presidents Organisation.
Romeo is passionate about the development of youth entrepreneurship and believes that the African youth has what it takes to solve the immense socio-economic problems facing developing democracies. His drive is to nurture the youth and help develop their breakthrough business ideas through equipping them with resources to develop their vision so as to bring about sustainable change. He is on a quest to teach young South African entrepreneurs how to start and bloom successful businesses.
Romeo holds a Master Degree in Commerce from UNISA and executive management certificates from WITS, INSEAD and is alumni of the HARVARD Business School.
Romeo is a keen marathon runner, cyclist, golfer and an avid reader.
